Baseball Opens HBCUAC Play with Win over Voorhees

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Stillman College baseball team scored early and maintained the lead en route to a 4-1 victory over the Voorhees University Tigers Thursday afternoon in the first HBCU Athletic Conference baseball contest for both institutions.

Samuel Fleming started the scoring for Stillman (2-5, 1-0) with some heads-up base running. After advancing to second base on a wild pitch, a misplay by the center fielder allowed Fleming to come around and score.

Stillman added to the lead in the second inning after Javian Rives collected an RBI single to right field and Isaiah Hoskins came around to score from third to push the lead to 2-0.

Jordyn Hill got Voorhees on the board with an RBI double to right field to cut the tally to 2-1.

However, the home Tigers responded in the fifth when Rives scored on a wild pitch. Stillman Then put the game away in the seventh with a sacrifice fly from Kobe Lewis to bring in Gavin Rehorn to move the score to the 4-1 final mark.

Six Tigers registered a hit as Kameran Belser, Sieas Elliot, Lewis, and Fleming finished 1-for-3. Elliot posted a double and Hoskins legged out a triple.

Griff Minor (1-0) pitched seven strong innings with six strikeouts. He scattered seven hits and allowed an earned run. Caleb Vallejo (1) earned the save in two innings of work. He struck out two batters and allowed a walk.

Stillman College returns to action tomorrow with a doubleheader against Voorhees University. First pitch at Tiger Field is scheduled for noon.
