Women’s Basketball Falls to Dega in Hardwood Classic

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Stillman College women's basketball team took to the road to face the Talladega College Tornadoes in the first match of the Hardwood Classic Saturday afternoon. Talladega came away with an 81-64 victory in Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference action. 

Stillman fell to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the HBCUAC, while the Tornadoes improved to 7-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. 

Rapid Recap:

Talladega jumped out to an 8-0 advantage capped by a three from Kameron Jones with 5:56 on the clock. Stillman battled back to close the gap to 14-13 with a layup from Chayce Matthews at 1:09 on the clock, but free throws from Olympia Chaney pushed the lead to 16-13 for Dega to end the quarter. 

Stillman took the lead in the second quarter with a layup for Tyeesha Slaughter at 9:18. Later in the quarter, however, Ceara Myers hit a layup to put the Tornadoes ahead 20-19 with 7:14 until the half. The shot represented the final lead change of the contest. Talladega went to the half with a four-point, 36-32 lead.

In the third, Dega went up by seven points, but Stillman did not go quietly as the Tigers cut the lead to one point following a layup from Mya Jones at 2:55 to move the score to 51-50. Unfortunately, the Tornadoes pushed the lead to 55-50 to end the period. 

The Tornadoes turned up the volume in the fourth quarter and outscored the Tigers 26-14 in the final stanza on the way to an 81-64 victory to take home the Hardwood Classic trophy. 

Notes and Numbers:

-Tyeesha Slaughter led a trio of double-digit scorers. She finished with 15 points alongside seven rebounds, an assist and a steal. 
-Tenyzia Lathan and Cameria Reed both scored 10 points. 
-Stillman connected on an impressive 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the free throw line.
