Women’s Basketball Handles Mobile for 86-74 Win on the Road

MOBILE, Ala. – The Stillman College women's basketball team had revenge on the mind, and did just that to the tune of an 86-74 win over the University of Mobile Rams Tuesday night in H. Austill Pharr Gymnasium.

Stillman improved to 2-1 on the young season, while Mobile dropped to 1-2 overall. 

Rapid Recap:

Sillman only trailed briefly at any point in the contest when Deja Pryor hit a three to put the Rams up 3-2 with 8:46 on the clock. After that, it was all Tigers, starting with a Jaida Minter layup to put Stillman on top for the last lead change of the contest. The Tigers' lead blossomed all the way to a 14-point advantage after Minter hit a jumper with 27 seconds remaining in the first to put her squad up 26-12. 

The lead continued to grow all the way to 27 points when Teyzia Lathan connected on a layup with 3:50 before half to move the score to 42-15. The Tigers outscored Mobile 17-11 in the second quarter to take a 43-23 advantage at halftime to the locker room.  

The Tigers continued to cruise in the third period with a 37-point lead at the 1:16 mark when Chayce Matthews nailed a free throw to move the score to 70-33. Mobile battled to get the deficit under 30 points after a layup with four seconds left by Emilee Duet cut the score to 70-43 heading to the final period. 

The Rams attempted a comeback for the ages in the fourth quarter and outscored the Tigers 31-16 in the final period. A free throw from Heaven Waltlington cut the lead to 15 points with 2:17 left and an 82-67 score in favor of Stillman. However, the Tigers used a layup from Mya Jones with 53 seconds left to go up 86-68, and Stillman coasted to an 86-74 win. 

Notes and Numbers:

-Five Tigers scored in double figures, led by 16 points from Tenyzia Lathan. Jaida Minter added 15 points, Jordan Harris posted 14 points, Jayla Young West provided 12 points and eight rebounds, and Tyeesha Slaughter added 11 points and nine rebounds. 

-Despite being the road team, the Tigers (44) shot more free throws than Mobile (31).

-Conversely, Stillman hoisted only six three-pointers, compared to the 26 shots from beyond the arc taken by the Rams.

The Tigers face the hosting HTU Rams on Nov. 7 at 7 p.m., and wrap the trip against the University of the Virgin Islands on Nov. 8 at 1 p.m.
