TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Stillman College fended off the Wiley Wildcats in the final seconds of overtime for a 98-97 victory. The win moves Stillman to 7-1 in the HBCU Athletic Conference men's basketball standings and now 2-0 in the HBCUAC Crossover.
Michael Taylor dribbled in and hit a floater from the right block to give Stillman a 98-97 lead with eight seconds to play.
Jeremiah Miller then came up with a game-saving block, swatting the ball out of Tayvion Fisher's hands with 3.6 seconds left. While the Wildcats grabbed the rebound, a last-second 3-point attempt was too late.
Stillman needed overtime to secure the win despite leading by 16 points in the first half.
Joshua Price's 10 points in the first half helped the Tigers to a 40-30 halftime lead. Wiley used a 20-5 run to take a three-point lead, 56-51, with 11 minutes to play in regulation. The Wildcats lead grew to seven points, but Stillman flipped the margin to lead 68-61 after a layup and 3-pointer by
Tyler Martin with around five minutes to play. Martin made it a 10-point game with three minutes to play.
Stillman saw an eight-point lead, 84-76, disappear in the final 33 seconds when Demarius Pitts hit a pair of 3-pointers coupled with Stillman going 1-of-4 at the free throw line. Jalen Bates' 3-pointer with three seconds left sent the game into overtime.
Five Stillman players scored in double digits, led by
Joshua Price's 18 points. Miller had 17 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks, both of which occured in the final minute of overtime. Calvin Finch, Jr., also posted a double-double with 15 rebounds and 13 points. Taylor finished with 15 points and Martin scored 13.
Pitts hit five 3s in the game and led Wiley with 28 points. Bates scored 20.
Stillman (9-6, 7-1) will host the defending HBCUAC Tournament champion Philander Smith Panthers on Monday, Jan. 6 at 8 p.m.
