Men’s Basketball Defeats Wilberforce, 66-58

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.-- Despite trailing at the half, the Stillman College men's basketball team adapted and overcame the Wilberforce University Bulldogs 66-58 Saturday evening in HBCU Athletic Conference action in Birthright Alumni Hall. 

The Tigers (12-7, 10-2) trailed 32-31 to start the second half, but the deficit was short-lived after D'Angelo Foster hit a layup followed by a jumper by Calvin Finch, Jr. to put the Tigers up 35-32. The team built a six-point lead after a three-pointer from Joshua Price pushed the score to 40-34 with 17:05 on the clock.

Stillman never trailed again in the contest, but Wilberforce (7-12, 5-8) battled back to tie the game 44-44 at the 12:50 mark after a layup from James Nekthy. However, the Tigers rallied to a nine-point lead when a pair of free throws from Jaylon Taylor at the 6:21 mark. 

The Bulldogs fought once more to cut the deficit to three when Cali Davis splashed a three-pointer to move the score to 61-58 at 1:18 on the clock. From there, the Tigers built another eight-point lead on the way to the final 66-58 score.

Jeremiah Miller led all scorers with 18 points along with five rebounds and two assists. Finch finished with 14 points, 19 rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Taylor rounded out a trio of double-digit scorers with 13 points. 

As a team, the Tigers finished 52.2 percent (24-of-46) from the floor, 31.3 percent (5-of-16), and 61.9 percent (13-of-21) at the free throw line. 

Davis led Wilberforce with 14 points and was the only double-digit scorer for the Bulldogs. 

Stillman College returns to action on Tuesday in HBCUAC action on the road against Talladega College and is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
