JACKSON, Miss. - Stillman College opened its first HBCU Athletic Conference Crossover with a straight-sets victory over SUNO, 25-14, 25-22 and 25-19. It is the Tigers' first road win since the program was reinstated in 2022.
Reigning HBCUAC Defender of the Week
Emily Powell led Stillman with 17 digs and five aces.
Kelis Conley and
Erin Nelson continued to divide up the Tigers' set assists with 12 and 11, respectively.
Stillman opened the match with a 9-2 lead over SUNO in the first set. A series of runs helped prevent the Knights from getting close. In the second set, SUNO worked the game even, and took a brief, 9-7 lead, before a Knights' service error was followed by a Nelson service ace to tie the set. Nelson served four-straight points as Stillman regained the lead, 12-9. The Tigers trailed again, 18-16, but Cameron and Moore each collected kills and an opponent attack error put Sitllman back in front.
Raine Patterson helped Stillman with a pair of kills and a block assist in a four-point rally that led the Tigers to set point. After the Knights fought back to pull within two, Patterson hammered home a kill to give Stillman the 2-0 edge in the match.
Set three also went back-and-forth early before seven-straight Tiger points pulled Stillman in front, 23-16, en route to the final victory.
Stillman (4-9, 3-2 HBCUAC) holds steady in fifth place overall in the HBCU Athletic Conference standings. The Tigers will meet two more HBCUAC West Division foes Saturday, beginning with host Tougaloo College at 11 a.m. and a night cap against Dillard University at 5 p.m.
