HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Stillman College saw its hopes for a Game 3 victory slip away Saturday afternoon, falling 10-7 at William Carey University to close out a three-game set in Southern States Athletic Conference baseball action. The Tigers lost the first two games Friday, 16-7 and 10-0.
Kobe Lewis led Stillman with four hits through the weekend, while
Kelvin Reese,
Griff Minor and
Samuel Fleming each had three.
Dylan Speakman, Fleming, Lewis and Reese each had two hits on Friday.
William Carey took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning Saturday before Stillman answered with seven-straight runs. Lewis singled in the Tigers' first run in the second inning, and Speakman pushed Reese across home plate with a ground out in the third. Lewis' RBI single in the fourth inning tied the game, 3-3. Fleming stole home to give Stillman a 4-3 lead. Minor doubled in a pair of runs in the fifth and later scored on a wild pitch.
Starting pitcher
Raymond Clark exited the game with a 7-3 lead after five innings.
Cody Clark allowed four runs, two earned, over the next nine batters faced to tie the game, 7-7. He exited the game after issuing a walk and two hit batters to load the bases in the seventh inning.
Carey closed out its win in the eighth inning, scoring three runs off
Isidro Rosario (0-2).
Stillman only had one base runner, a Minor single, in the sixth through ninth innings.
In the first game of the series, Stillman took a 4-0 lead with RBIs collected by Fleming and Reese.
Raymon Vaughn (2-5) allowed seven runs as part of William Carey's nine runs across the first two innings. Stillman trailed 9-4 before Speakman collected a ground out RBI in the fourth inning. Stillman scored two in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch and RBI single by
Geoff Grier to cap all scoring in the 16-7 loss.
The Tigers were held to three hits in the second game Friday, being shut out 10-0 in seven innings. The Crusaders used a five-run fourth inning to break open a 3-0 game.
Griff Minor (1-3) recorded the loss with three innings pitched.
Mason Mergenthal also pitched 3.1 innings.
Stillman (9-22, 3-17 SSAC) is scheduled to travel to Oakwood University on Tuesday, April 2, weather permitting.
