Stillman Softball Splits at UT Southern

PULASKI, Tenn. - Stillman College maintained the best record in NAIA softball despite splitting a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader at the University of Tennessee Southern on Sunday. Stillman (19-1, 3-1 SSAC) won the first game, 9-1, before having its 19-game win streak snapped with an 8-4 loss in game two. 
Madison Bubel led Stillman with five hits in the doubleheader, while Anniston Jones and Lauren Haskins each had four hits. Carolyn Carter had a three-hit day. Karli Davidson and Katelyn Lankford each had two hits. 
 
GAME 1: STILLMAN 9, UT SOUTHERN 1
Kassidy Davis drove in an early run for UT Southern in the top of the first.  
Stillman scored four runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to help secure its 19th-straight win. After Karli Davidson tied the game with an RBI Ground out, Anniston Jones and Sara Kate Nichols both delivered RBI singles. A Katelyn Madison sacrifice fly made it 4-1 Stillman. The Tigers added to their extra base hit totals in the top of the fifth with an RBI double from Madison Bubel, followed by an RBI triple from Carolyn Carter to spark a four-run inning. Davidson and Madison each added another RBI in the inning. 
Katelynn Lankford tacked on another Tiger run in the top of the seventh with an RBI single up the middle. 
Bubel led Stillman with a 3-for-4 game, while Carter and Jones each hit 2-for-4. All three scored two runs and had one RBI. 
Lexi McCray (7-0) earned the win in relief, pitching 3.1 shutout innings. She allowed one hit. Jasmine Wade was the starter and exited the game after 3.2 innings. She allowed one unearned run off one hit and three walks. She had five strikeouts.
GAME 2: UT SOUTHERN 8, STILLMAN 4
UT Southern jumped out to a 6-0 lead through two innings, including three runs off a pair of home runs from Stella Gillbreath. Gilbreath was also the winning pitcher, earning the complete-game victory with only one earned run allowed.
After leaving the bases loaded in the third inning, Stillman fought back with a four-run top of the fourth. A passed ball and error helped contribute to the first runs, while Lauren Haskins doubled in the last two. Haskins hit 3-for-4 in the game, while Madison Bubel and Anniston Jones were 2-for-4.
UT Southern responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. H Parrott doubled to start the inning and scored on a Hannah Lindsey double. Kaley Ezell's sac fly capped the scoring. 
Stillman left two runners on base in each the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, totaling 10 runners left on base in the game.
Faith Byram (4-1) was charged with the first Stillman loss, allowing three earned runs through the first 1.1 innings. Elisaebth Boso also gave up three runs, two earned, off three hits in 0.2 innings of work in the second inning. Lexi McCray also pitched four innings, allowing two runs. 
NEXT: Stillman (19-1, 3-1 SSAC) is scheduled to host SSAC front runners No. 13 University of Mobile and No. 21 William Carey University in doubleheaders later this week. The series dates, originally scheduled for March 15-16, will now be played midweek with Mobile coming to Tuscaloosa on Wednesday, March 13 at 3 p.m., followed by William Carey on Thursday, March 14 at 3 p.m.
