MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Eighth-seeded Stillman College came out hot in the first half against top-seed Loyola University, but the Wolfpack pulled away in the final 20 minutes for a 67-57 win Thursday in the Southern States Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championships quarterfinals, presented by Newk's Eatery.
The Tigers shot 60% in the first quarter to lead Loyola 18-16 through 10 minutes of action. Stillman held a 33-32 lead at the half.
A 15-2 Loyola run, consisting of eight free throws, proved to be the turning point in the third quarter. Both teams shot around 67% from the free throw line, but Loyola had 22 more free throw attempts than the Tigers and made 29 to Stillman's 14 in the 10-point loss.
Jamariah Turner led Stillman with 13 points off the bench, while
Alexandria Haymon and
Farrah Pearson scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Caitlin Thomas led all players with 20 points and eight rebounds for Loyola. Taylor Thomas followed with 16 points, and Sandra Cannady scored 12 and had 12 rebounds. Alissa O'Dell also crashed the boards with 10 rebounds.
Stillman concludes its season with a 16-12 overall record.
