MOBILE, Ala. - Stillman College women's basketball led by 14 in the fourth quarter, but was unable to fully stop a late rally by the University of Mobile in a 55-52 Southern States Athletic Conference loss to close the regular season.
Stillman led most of the game. After a 16-7 first quarter, the Tigers continued to lead the rest of the first half. When Mobile threatened midway in the second quarter, cutting its deficit to a point,
Raena Suggs answered with a layup to keep Stillman in front, 21-18. Stillman led 30-21 at halftime. Suggs scored eight points in the first half.
The Tigers led by double digits most of the third quarter, including a 14-point lead, 41-27, following a
Jamariah Turner 3-pointer. The margin remained until the final five minutes of action.
Hannah Boykin-Williams' free throw with 5:14 to play made it a 12-point game, 52-40. Mobile scored the final 15 points of the game.
Alanna Donaldson's layup with around 30 seconds to play gave Mobile the lead, 53-52. Mackenzie White then forced a turnover and drew a foul with 14 seconds left, before sinking both free throws to ice the game.
Suggs led Stillman with 13 points.
Farrah Pearson added nine, while Turner and
Thaniyah Marks each scored eight points for Stillman.
Miya Kimber led Mobile with 14 points, while White and Erica Jones each scored 12.
Stillman (15-11, 9-9 SSAC) finished the regular season in a three-way tie for sixth in the SSAC, but will enter the tournament as the No. 8 seed behind Point University and Brewton-Parker College. Stillman will meet nine-seed Blue Mountain Christian University on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 12:30 p.m. in the second game of the 2024 SSAC Women's Basketball Championships, presented by Newks' Eatery. The winner will play No. 1 Loyola in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
