TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - A sold out Birthright Alumni Hall energized Stillman College men's basketball in a Homecoming showdown against Life University on Saturday, but the Tigers fell short in the final seconds of overtime, 103-100.
Trailing by seven in the first half, Stillman charged forward with a 19-2 rally to lead by ten points, 42-32, with less than five minutes to play in the first half. Life pulled back within three points in the final two minutes of the half, but an
Antonio Jones three-point play and a fadeaway 3 at the buzzer by
Jamar Jackson pushed Stillman's halftime lead to 55-46.
Life fought its way back into the game to retake the lead, 74-73, on a Nathan Presnell layup with less than 10 minutes left in the second quarter. A pair of Jones layups regained Stillman's lead, 87-86, with less than a minute remaining. Dara Olonade drew a foul with nine seconds left and sank 1-of-2 free throws.
Bailey Talley grabbed the rebound and Jones looked for a third layup to win the game. Challenged at the rim, Jones' shot rimmed off. Talley tried for a putback, but the shot did not fall, sending the game into overtime.
Marcus Bates regained Stillman's lead to open the extra period. Four free throws from Jackson gave Stillman a two-possession lead. A three-point by Elias Ramirez put Life back in front.
Justin Minter drove to the basket with 1:32 left and sank a free throw to tie the game, 96-96, but that was the closest Stillman got. A turnover with a minute left was followed by a Presnall dunk as he scored eight overtime points to lead all players with 28.
Joshua Ward hit 3-of-4 free throws in the final 10 seconds to score 21. Stillman was unable to put up a game-tying three in the final second.
Both teams had five players score double digits. Jackson, Jones and Bates finished with 22, 21, and 20 points, respectively. Talley had 19 and Minter 14.
Ramirez was third for Life with 18 points, while Dara Olonade had a double-double 12 points and 11 rebounds. Devin Story scored 11.
Stillman (17-8, 14-4) holds onto a one-game lead in the SSAC standings with two games to play. The Tigers will host William Carey University on Tuesday, Feb. 20 for Senior Night at 7:30 p.m.
