TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Stillman College locked up the No. 2 seed in the Southern States Athletic Conference Championships with an 89-81 win over William Carey University on Tuesday night.
The Tigers trailed most of the first half, and by as many as nine in the second half, before charging back by shooting 65.5% in the second half to win the final home game of the season.
Kyin Healy came off the bench to spark Stillman in the second half. his jumper with less than eight minutes to play started a 16-1 Tigers' run. He followed the layup with a defensive rebound to set up a
Justin Minter layup, then grabbed a steal and later assisted an
Antonio Jones 3-pointer to put Stillman in front, 71-69. Healey then hit a pair of free throws to stretch the lead, 73-69.
Marcus Bates Jr. scored the next five points before Minter swiped a steal and threw an assist off the backboard for a dunk by Jones that put Stillman up by 10 points, 80-70. The remaining three minutes were spent at the free throw line with Jones, Minter, Bates, Healey and
Jamar Jackson combining for 9-of-12 on free throws.
Bates finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Tigers in his final game in Tuscaloosa. Minter scored 20, while
Bailey Talley also had a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. Jackson finished with 11 points, while Jones and Healey each scored nine.
Dylan Brumfield scored 24 to lead WCU.
Stillman (18-8, 15-4 SSAC) has a two-game lead over third-place University of Mobile, which is ranked No. 19 in the NAIA. The Tigers will close the regular season at Mobile on Saturday at 2 p.m.
