TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Playing in front of its home crowd for the first time since February, Stillman College men's basketball took the Week 1 lead in the HBCU Athletic Conference standings with an 87-80 win over Fisk University on Saturday.
The Tigers drained four 3-pointers to start the game on a 14-0 lead. Stillman led by double digits most of the first half before entering halftime up 45-37.
Each time Fisk made it a two-possession game in the second half,
Jeremiah Miller had an answer. Scoring 24 points off the bench to lead the Tigers in his Stillman home debut, Miller had a layup, dunk and 3-pointer during a personal 7-0 run that turned a four-point game into a 61-50 lead with 14:20 to play. The lead grew to 15 points, but Fisk later fought back to make it five points, 76-71, on a basket by Doyle Cockrell, who led all players with 37 points.
Calvin Finch Jr grabbed an offensive rebound and powered a dunk on the other end to keep Stillman in control. Finch scored 20 points in a complete game performance and grabbed 15 rebounds.
Joshua Price added 19 points, while
Tyler Martin and
Jaylon Taylor each scored eight points. Finch and Taylor combined for six free throws in the final minute.
Stillman (2-4, 2-0 HBCUAC) will remain home Monday, Nov. 18 to host Southeastern Baptist College in non-conference action at 7:30 p.m.
