TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Six players scored double-digits Wednesday night to lead Stillman College to a 99-72 Southern States Athletic Conference men's basketball win over Dalton State College in Birthright Alumni Hall.
Bailey Talley's double-double 21 points and 15 rebounds paced Stillman, followed by 19 points and eight rebounds from
Tyler Martin and 17 points and seven assists from
Justin Minter.
Jamar Jackson scored 14 points, including 11 in the first half, while
Brenden Lankford-Johnson and Marcus Bates Jr each scored 11.
The Road Runners raced out to a 9-2 lead, but Stillman stormed back in its first home game in three weeks. After Martin fired a 3 from the right wing to make it a one-point game, 12-11, Jackson hit a deep 3 from the left wing for his first points of the season and the Tigers' first lead of the game. It was the first of three consecutive 3s for Jackson, followed by a reverse dunk and then a 3-point play by Bates to secure Stillman's lead 25-14 around the nine-minute mark. Stillman led by as many as 17 points, 38-21, in the first half, but Dalton State closed the half on a 15-3 run to make it a five-point game at halftime, 41-36.
While Dalton State cut the difference to a point early in the second half, 41-40, Stillman used a 12-0 run to rebuild its double-digit lead, 57-44, with 15:37 left in the game. Stillman shot 62.5% from the field in the second half, including 54% from 3-point range. Even post player Kyin Healy got in on the long shot, hitting a 3 in the game. With eight minutes to play in the game, Lankford-Johnson hit four free throws and Martin hit a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer to push the Tigers' lead to 25 points, 84-59 with over six minutes to play. The largest lead of the night was 30 points, 99-69, after a pair of Minter free throws in the final minute.
Stillman passed up a chance to break 100 points, purposefully taking a shot clock violation to run out the clock.
The Tigers out-rebounded the Road Runners in the game, 46-32, and shut down Dalton's perimeter, shooting only 17.6% from 3-point range compared to the Tigers' 45.2% from 3-point.
Matt Compas led Dalton State with 20 points and Harrison Eghan scored 11.
Stillman (9-6, 6-2 SSAC) will travel to Life University in Marietta, Georgia on Saturday, Jan. 13 for a 1 p.m. tip.
