ATLANTA, Ga. - Stillman College pitcher
Steven Oates has been named to the third annual HBCU All-Star Game, presented by Minority Baseball Prospects. Oates was a late addition to the Team Andre Dawson roster for the game, which is scheduled for Saturday, June 3 at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Coolray Field is home of the Gwinnett Stripers, the Atlanta Braves' Triple-A affiliate.
"This was a goal I set for myself before the season started. I look forward to the camaraderie of all the players that work hard and put in the effort it takes to get an honor like this one. I'm just blessed to be in the position," Oates said.
Oates, a pitcher from Mobile, Alabama, is the second Stillman College player to be selected to the game, joining
Kelvin Reese, who played in the 2021 and 2022 All-Star games. Reese was also invited to participate as a 2023 All-Star but will not participate in the game due to injury.
During the 2023 season, Oates collected two wins, including a combined no-hitter in the season opener. He struck out 54 batters in 51.2 innings pitched. During his three-year career at Stillman, Oates pitched 95.1 innings in 28 games, including 22 starts. He had three wins and one save. He struck out 96.
The All-Star Weekend includes a pro combine on Friday, June 2 at noon and a youth clinic Saturday at noon. the Fastest Prospect competition and Home Run Derby will happen before the game Saturday with first pitch for the All-Star Game scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET Saturday.
