DECATUR, Ala. - Stillman College was the only team playing twice on Day 1 of the Southern States Athletic Conference Softball Championships, but was unable to put together a sweep. After winning Game 1 of the tournament, 2-1, over Faulkner University, Stillman fell 8-0 in five innings to top-seed University of Mobile in the tournaments' fourth game of the day.
The Tigers were held to five hits by Mobile pitcher Brinkley Goff (16-5).
Lauren Haskins hit 2-for-3 to lead the Tigers, while
Mackenzie Kirby,
Anniston Jones and
Katelyn Lankford each had one hit.
Mobile scored two runs in each the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead before adding one run in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Faith Byram (9-5) recorded the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, off two hits, one walk and three wild pitches in two innings.
Jasmine Wade and
Elisabeth Boso also pitched, allowing three runs apiece.
Stillman (34-16) will now move to the elimination bracket and is scheduled to play on Friday, May 5 at noon against the winner of the 10 a.m. game between Brewton-Parker College and Blue Mountain Christian University. The winner of the noon game will play again at 3 p.m. Friday for a chance to reach Saturday's elimination bracket final prior to the championship game.
