Tiger Rallies Cut Short Against No. 7 Mobile

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Stillman College baseball didn't go down without a fight Wednesday, falling to No. 7 University of Mobile, 3-1 and 17-8, in Southern States Athletic Conference action.

Stillman posted rallies in both games but were unable to complete the comeback wins against the SSAC front runners.

GAME 1: No. 7 MOBILE 3, STILLMAN 1

Stillman matched No. 7 Mobile hit-for-hit and nearly run-for-run in a Game 1 loss, 3-1, Wednesday afternoon.

Tucker Musgrove drew a two-out walk in the top of the third inning and scored on a Jackson Breal double to give Mobile its early lead. Stillman immediately answered to tie the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the third. TJ Davis reached on a one-out walk and moved to third on a Kelvin Reese double. Bobby Woodard hit a sacrifice fly to score Davis.

Mobile took its winning lead in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Landon Moore took a pitch off his left shoulder blade before Musgrove drove a ball deep into right field. The double was misplayed, allowing the go-ahead run to score on an error. Breal followed with a sac fly to score Musgrove and a 3-1 Rams lead.

Stillman loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with one-out singles by Mason Collins and Sammuel Fleming and a Bryant Rhooms walk. However, Musgrove struck out the last two Tiger batters to end the game with the winning run on first base.

Devin Kelly collected the Tigers' first hit of the day and was joined by Davis, Reese, Collins and Fleming to make up Stillman's five hits in the game.

Raymon Vaughn (1-2) was charged with the loss, allowing two earned runs off five hits and three walks in the complete, seven-inning game. He struck out six.

Musgrove led Mobile with a 2-for-2 day at the plate with two walks and two runs scored. He closed the final two innings on the mound for his seventh save of the season. Kyle White (3-1) recorded the Rams' win with three hits and one run allowed through five innings. He had three strikeouts.

GAME 2: No. 7 MOBILE 17, STILLMAN 8

Facing a nine-run deficit after five innings, Stillman scored four runs in the sixth to cut into Mobile's lead, 12-7. It was 13-8 after seven before the Rams grabbed four runs in the top of the eighth in the 17-8 game.

Mobile took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Stillman worked the bases loaded in the second inning. Devin Kelly delivered a hard-hit single that was knocked down by the Mobile second baseman to score Kelvin Reese to tie the game, 1-1.

Tucker Musgrove doubled down the left field line to start the third and scored on an error. In the bottom of the third, Sieas Elliot drilled the first pitch over the left field fence for his second home run of the season, tying the game, 2-2.

Trey Watson put the Rams back in front with a two-run home run to right in the top of the fourth inning, 4-2. It was the start of a four-run fourth inning, followed by a six-run top of the fifth to stretch Mobile's lead, 12-3.

Stillman added a run in the bottom of the fourth when Bilal Whittle drew a leadoff walk and scored on a bases-loaded double play. Whittle then beat out a single to the shortstop to start the bottom of the sixth. It was the first of three-consecutive singles, inducing an RBI from Kobe Lewis to score Whittle. Elliot pushed another run across with a sac fly to right before Bryant Rhooms doubled in two more runs.

Mobile and Stillman traded runs in the seventh inning, with the Rams scoring on a bases-loaded walk. Whittle scored for the Tigers in the bottom of the inning on a passed ball after being hit by a pitch to reach base. The Rams scored four in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Kelly hit 3-for-6 for Stillman, while Lewis was 3-for-3 with a pair of walks and was hit once. Both scored a run and had one RBI. Elliott and Rhooms each drove in two runs, while Whittle reached base four times and scored three times.

Grigg Minor (2-4) had the loss after allowing 11 runs through 4.1 innings. Raul Polanco, Deuntre Dunklin and Justin Cummings each had time on the mound.

NEXT: Stillman (11-19, 1-13) will close its series against Mobile (26-6, 12-2) on Thursday with a single game at noon.
