MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Stillman College both games of a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday evening at Faulkner University's Harrison Field, 15-4 and 12-2.
Four different Tigers had two hits on the day.
The three-game series will conclude Saturday at noon. The wins pulled Faulkner even on the season at 16-16, 7-7 SSAC. The Eagles, though currently unranked, opened the season No. 6 in the NAIA.
GAME 1: FAULKNER 15, STILLMAN 4 (7 Inn.)
Trailing 14-0, Stillman (11-16, 1-10 SSAC) pushed two runs across in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Montgomery native
Kelvin Reese was hit by a pitch. He scored moments later on an RBI double by
Bilal Whittle. An error on the play moved Whittle to third, helping set up a sac fly by
Bobby Woodard.
Faulkner added another run in the bottom of the sixth before Stillman scored two more in the top of the seventh. Reese drove a one-out single through the left side, followed by a Whittle single to right off new pitcher Stephen Spurgeon. A ground ball to third by
Devin Kelly scored Reese. Whittle later scored on a wild pitch, but Stillman was unable to push across any more runs to extend the game.
The Tigers left seven runners on base in the game.
Whittle,
Griff Minor and
Kobe Lewis each hit 2-for-3 for Stillman, with Woodard and Reese having one hit apiece.
Mason Collins was charged with the loss on the hill, allowing eight earned runs, nine total, off eight hits and four walks through 2.1 innings. J.C. Toro (4-5) recorded Faulkner's win.
GAME 2: FAULKNER 12, STILLMAN 2 (8 Inn.)
Faulkner took a 5-0 lead through the first four innings.
Sieas Elliot busted up a no-hit bid by the Eagles' Alexis Saldana (5-1) with a leadoff single in the top of the fifth. With one out,
Kelvin Reese tripled down the line to score courtesy runner
Varrick Lawrence.
The Eagles added three more runs before Stillman added another run in the eighth.
Devin Kelly reached on a one-out error and took second on a wild pitch. When stealing third, a bad throw the Faulker catcher allowed Kelly to score, making it 8-2.
Isidro Jimenez took over for
Steven Oates (2-4) to record the final two outs of the bottom of the seventh. He retired the first batter in the eighth before walking the bases loaded. A wild pitch, RBI single by Jorge Lucero, balk and wild pitch snowballed into four Eagles runs for Faulkner to end the game early.
Elliott hit 2-for-3 for Stillman, with Reese having the only other Tigers hit.
Oates allowed eight runs off 11 hits and five walks through six innings for Stillman.
