TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Stillman College posted a late five-run rally but it was not enough to overcome the No. 20 William Carey University Crusaders in a 9-5 Southern States Athletic Conference loss.
Tigers' starting pitcher
Steven Oates gave up three runs early but held the Crusaders scoreless in the third through fifth innings. WCU added three runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to take a 9-0 lead.Â
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Siaes Elliot and
Kelvin Reese drew walks and
Devin Kelly was hit by a pitch to load the bases. One run scored on a
Griff Minor ground out before
Kobe Lewis doubled to right center to score two more.Â
Bryant Rhooms doubled to right to start the ninth and advanced to third as the ball was bobbled. He scored on a
Samuel Fleming single up the middle.
Tre'en Dorsett then drove the ball into right field to score one more run.Â
Oates allowed three runs, two earned, off five hits and five walks through six innings. He struck out three.
Deuntre Dunklin pitched the seventh and
Justin Cummings threw the last two innings for Stillman.Â
Andrew Shirah (4-1) recorded the win for William Carey, allowing five runs off five hits and five walks. He struck out four. He carried a no hitter through 4.2 innings until Elliott doubled down the left field line in the bottom of the fifth inning.Â
Stillman (10-11, 1-6) will host William Carey (21-6, 5-2) for a doubleheader Saturday at noon.Â
