Tigers' Win Streak Snapped at Alabama A&M

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Stillman College dropped its first game of the season Tuesday, falling to NCAA Division I foe Alabama A&M University. The Tigers entered the game with the third-longest active win streak in the NAIA at eight games.

Stillman was one of three teams from Alabama riding an eight game win streak through Feb. 26, joining the University of Alabama (8-0) and University of Montevallo (12-1). Troy University had one seven-straight and Birmingham-Southern College had six-straight wins.

Early struggles on the hill by the Tigers on Tuesday, following a week off, helped AAMU to its first run. Chevalier Dorris drew a lead off walk and advanced on a wild pitch and stolen base before scoring on a passed ball. Jared Tribett singled in a run to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. AAMU added another run in the third inning off a bases-loaded passed ball.

Geoff Grier woke up the Tigers' bats to lead off the fourth inning with a single. After Griff Minor reached on a fielder's choice, he scored on a Mason Collins double to cut into the lead, 3-1.

The Bulldogs' added a pair of RBI extra base hits in the fourth to lead 5-1. AAMU added another run in the sixth on a two-out RBI single by Tribett, who hit 4-for-4 with three RBI. Stillman pitched out of a bases-loaded jam, but three more Bulldog runs scored in the eighth, 10-1. Stillman added a run in the top of the ninth on an RBI groundout by Bryant Rhooms.

Grier, Collins, Raymon Vaughn, Troy Davis and Kelvin Reese each had one hit for Stillman.

Tommy Easley followed Tribett's lead with three hits and two RBI for AAMU.

Steven Oates took the loss, allowing one earned run off one hit and five walks through 2 2/3 innings. He struck out four. Minor, Isidro Jimenez, Jose Angles and Cody Clark also took the mound.

Jason Garcia was awarded the win, pitching three scoreless, no-hit innings. He walked one and struck out two. Stillman scored runs off both Tyler Campbell and Dustin Hernandez.

AAMU moves to 5-4 on the year with a 5-2 mark against HBCUs and a pair of losses at No. 3 Tennessee.

Stillman (8-1) will open Southern States Athletic Conference play on Friday when it hosts Blue Mountain Christian University for a noon doubleheader. There will be a single nine-inning game against BMCU on Saturday at noon.
