Stillman Scores 19 Runs in Sweep of UT Southern

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Madison Bubel powered Stillman College's offense Saturday afternoon, driving in seven runs and scoring four times as part of a 5-for-7 day at the plate as Stillman College swept the University of Tennessee Southern, 11-2 and 8-0.

The wins mark Stillman's first sweep of a Mid-South Conference team and snaps a six-game skid in the series against Tennessee Southern.

Stillman (11-1) improves its win streak to five games, while moving to 10-0 at home for the first time in known program history. Through 11 games, the Tigers have now out-scored opponents 115-15 with eight run-rule victories.

GAME 1: STILLMAN 11, TENNESSEE SOUTHERN 2 (5 INN.)

Bubel hit 4-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored to help Stillman run-rule the Firehawks in Game 1, 11-2.

Lauren Haskins hit 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, while Brooklyn Pennington, Mackenzie Kirby and Carolyn Carter each had two hits and an RBI.

Stillman's starting pitcher Lexi McCray (4-1) fell behind early, allowing two runs in the top of the first, one unearned. However, the Tigers responded with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead. Pennington, Bubel and Kirby each drove in a run in the bottom of the first.

Carter's RBI double in the third inning stretched Stillman's lead before Bailie Seales delivered a sac fly in the fourth, followed by a Bubel RBI triple. One more run scored on an error to give Stillman a 7-2 lead through four innings. Haskins and Bubel each drove in two runs in the fifth inning, including the walk-off single by Bubel.

GAME 2: STILLMAN 8, TENNESSEE SOUTHERN 0  (5 INN.)

Faith Byram (4-0) pitched a one-hit complete game shutout to cap the afternoon in Stillman's 8-0, five-inning win. After Buram gave up a two-out single to McKenzie Cain in the top of the first inning, she retired the next 12 batters faced until giving up a two-out walk in the fifth inning. She struck out one.

Stillman worked the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the third inning. An error allowed two runners to score after the Firehawks threw out the lead runner at the plate. Pennington followed with a single to put runners on first and second before Bubel blasted a three-run homer to left to give Stillman a 5-0 lead.

The Tigers added three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Haskins beat out her third infield hit of the day before scoring on a Seales' RBI single up the middle. With one out, Kirby singled in Seales before Carter delivered a two-out single past the shortstop to score pinch runner Katelynn Madison from third base to end the game, 8-0.

Pennington hit 2-for-3 in Game 2, while Stillman had one hit apiece from Haskins, Seales, Bubel, Kirby, Carter, Katelyn Lankford and Taylor Roland.

NEXT: Stillman College (11-1) will continue its non-conference schedule Thursday when MUW visits Tuscaloosa for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
