TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Stillman College's upset bid of No. 16 University of Mobile fell short Saturday in Southern States Athletic Conference men's basketball action at Birthright Alumni Hall.
Bailey Talley posted a double-double 18 points and 12 rebounds, while
Khalil Johnson scored 18 off the bench to lead the Tigers. Backup point guard
Michael Taylor scored 16 points.
The game saw seven lead changes in the first half. After Taylor hit a pair of free throws to give the Tigers a 23-22 lead with 6:43 to play, Stillman built its lead to nine points, 33-24. Johnson hit a pair of 3s, followed by a Talley 3-pointer to stretch the lead. Mobile managed to cut the lead to two points before a Taylor layup kept Stillman in front by four points at halftime, 35-31.
Stillman maintained its lead until the 15 minute mark in the second half. Damariee Jones scored four-straight points to put the Rams up, 46-43. A trio of Johnson 3-pointers later helped put the Tigers back in front by seven, 56-49.
Over the next five minutes, Mobile benefited from shooting 8-of-8 free throws to go along with a layup and 3-pointer to keep the Rams in the game. Trent Moye hit a 3-pointer and a layup to regain Mobile's lead, 67-65, with less than five minutes to play. Mobiel shot 12-of-13 from the free throw line in the last 10 minutes of the game and had 13 more attempts in the game than the Tigers.
Stillman was unable to regain the lead, despite making it a one-point game, 73-72, on a
Justin Minter fastbreak layup with 57 seconds left.
Moye hit five 3-pointers and led all players with 27 points. Two Rams had double-doubles with Ezra McKenna posting 18 points and 14 rebounds, followed by Jones' 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Stillman (6-6, 3-2 SSAC) will close the first semester on Monday, hosting Loyola University for a SSAC doubleheader at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are reduced to $10. Those who donate a new toy will be admitted for $5.
