MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - Stillman College women's basketball was unable to erase a late rally by Brewton Parker College in a 46-44 road loss Thursday night to open Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) action.
Stillman led by eight at the half but Brewton-Parker flipped the score into a seven-point lead, 43-36, to open the fourth quarter. The Tigers out-scored the Barons 8-3 in the final nine minutes, including a
Farrah Pearson 3-pointer that pulled Stillman within a point, 45-44, with 10 seconds to play. After Maddison Evans made and missed on a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining, Pearson snagged the rebound to give Stillman the last shot.
JaMesha King's jumper in the final second was no good.
Pearson led Stillman with nine points, 15 rebounds and five assists. King had 10 boards.
Brewton-Parker led early in the game until
Hannah Boykin-Williams hit a 3 to give Stillman its first lead, 11-9, with 3:21 left in the first quarter. Stillman maintained its lead through the rest of the first half for an eight-point halftime lead, 29-21.
The Barons broke the Tigers' hold with 5:25 to play in the third quarter on an A'aliyah Clay 3-pointer. The lead changed times and was tied once, 36-36, in the third quarter before BPC carried a 40-36 edge into the final 10 minutes.
Thaniyah Marks was tied for second in scoring and was third in rebounds for Stillman with six points and eight boards.
Kashara Preston also scored six points and had four assists.. The Tigers' 44 points were divided among nine players.
Clay and Evans scored 15 and 10 points, respectively, to lead Brewton-Parker (6-1, 1-0 SSAC).
Stillman (3-2, 0-1 SSAC) will travel to Middle Georgia State University on Saturday for a SSAC game set to begin at noon ET.
