HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Five players scored in double digits Tuesday night, as Stillman College cruised to an 87-63 road victory at Oakwood University to open the 2022-2023 women's basketball season.
Returning guards
Laneja Warner and
Imani Wimbish-Gay led Stillman's starters with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Jamesha King came on strong in the second half to finish with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting in 17 minutes of action.
Tiger newcomer
Farrah Pearson scored the first three points of the night but was held to seven points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Amaria Strong also had seven points as a starter.
Stillman's bench produced 40 points, led by 11 points each from
Kelcie Smith and newcomer
Alexandria Haymon, who also had seven rebounds and two assists.
Desiree Tyner led the defense with nine total rebounds, two blocked shots and three steals, while contributing seven points.
While shooting 60% as a team, Stillman held the Ambassadors to 13.3% shooting in the third quarter to out-score Oakwood 35-11 in the 10-minute span. The Tigers led 72-39 after three quarters of action.
Oakwood finished strong, shooting 55.6% in the fourth quarter, but Stillman kept pace to maintain the 24-point win.
OU was led in scoring with 15 points from both Hannah Cohn and Trenishia Adams. Jada Caldwell added 11 points and Keiah Dancy scored nine.
Stillman (1-0) will now travel to Webber International in Florida to participate in the SSAC/Sun Conference Challenge on Nov. 4-5. The Tigers will meet fellow HBCU Florida Memorial University on Nov. 4 at 2:30 p.m. and then No. 6 Southeastern University on Saturday. Loyola University will also represent the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC), meeting Southeastern on Friday and FMU on Saturday.
