TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Stillman College's upset bid against No. 11 Faulkner University came up short Tuesday, falling 72-61 in the Southern States Athletic Conference and home opener.
A large poured into Birthright Alumni Hall for its first glimpse at the Tigers after two weeks of road games. Seven Stillman players were playing their first home game in a Stillman uniform.
Khalil Johnson and
Daviyon Dennis hit back-to-back 3s to give Stillman its first lead, 14-13, with 10 minutes left in the first half. The duo combined to score all of Stillman's 13 points in a two-minute span to help keep Stillman in front, 21-18. After Trace Hill tied it,
Bailey Talley answered with a Tigers' jumper and dunk to spark a 6-0 rally. Stillman's largest lead, 27-21, came on a pair of Brendan Lankford-Johnson free throws with 5:16 to play in the opening half. C.J. Hines scored swiped a steal and threw down a fastbreak dunk to end Faulkner's scoring drought and spark an 11-point Eagles run to close the first half.
Stillman trailed 32-27 at the break.
Marcus Bates Jr. scored twice in the opening two minutes to push Stillman back within three points, 34-31, but another six-point run created distance for Faulkner.
Stillman trailed by as many as 11 points in the fourth quarter before cutting it to four points, 59-55, on a
Tyler Martin layup with 5:15 to play. Faulkner responded though, creating a 13-point cushion, 69-56, entering the final minute of play.
Derrick Finklea led Stillman with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. Talley and Lankford-Johnson each scored nine in their Stillman home debut.
Faulkner had five players score in double figures, led by Trace Hill's 17 points and Hines' 17 points.
Stillman (1-3, 0-1 SSAC) will remain home Thursday, Nov. 17 to host Oakwood University at 7:30 p.m., following the women's game.
