Stillman Takes Down No. 21 Rust

HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. - Stillman College women's basketball collected its second NAIA Top 25 upset in seven days, with a 59-56 win at No. 21 Rust College Bearcats. The win spoiled the Bearcats first game of their Dr. Ismell Edwards Founders Day Classic and moves Stillman to 6-0. 

  
Stillman flipped a seven-point deficit in the third quarter into a seven-point fourth-quarter lead. The Tigers trailed 32-25 one minute into the second half, but built an 11-2 run to take the lead, 36-34, on a Laneja Warner 3-pointer with 5:44 left in the third quarter. While Rust worked the game even, Kelcie Smith answered with a layup to keep Stillman in front, and the Tigers did not trail again. 
 
The Tigers out-scored the Bearcats, 16-7, in the third quarter. Amaria Strong hit a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter and give Stillman six-point lead. In the final minute, Strong made a layup to make it a seven-point game, 57-50, and then assisted Desiree Tyner to answer a Rust 3-pointer, 59-53. 
 
Faith Cattouse hit a 3 for Rust with 24 seconds. While Stillman turned the ball over, Warner stole it back with nine seconds left to help secure the win. 
 
Rust led most of the first half. Midway through the first quarter, Imani Wimbish-Gay hit a 3 to give Stillman its first lead of the game, 8-5. Rust closed the opening quarter on an 7-2 run to lead 12-10 after 10 minutes. The Bearcats led the entire second quarter and carried a 30-24 lead into halftime.
 
Amaria Strong led all players with 15 points on 80% shooting (4-of-5), while adding six rebounds and three assists. 
 
Warner and Desiree Tyner followed with 11 points and Wimbish-Gay scored nine. Jamesha King also had six rebounds and was held to four points on 2-of-4 shooting. Tyner had five boards. 
 
Stillman shot 46.7% as a team, and won the rebound battle, 32-29. 
 
Rust was led by Faith Cattouse's 1 points. Ahmari Young and Lyric Turner followed with nine and eight points, respectively. 
 
Stillman (6-0) will play at home in Birthright Alumni Hall for the first time this season, when it hosts Faulkner University (3-1) in the States Athletic Conference opener on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 5:30 p.m.
