Atlanta, GA—Top-seeded Stillman College men's tennis team claimed its first title in school history by defeating No.2 Morehouse College (5-0) in the 2013 SIAC Tennis Championship match played on the campus of Morehouse College Saturday evening.
The Tigers used a strong performance by its doubles team to race out to a 3-0 lead, before winning the first two singles matches to claim the hardware after finishing as the runner-up in 2012.
Janguen Lee and David Torres defeated Morehouse's Kahai Hall and Jabez Beazer in No.1 doubles (8-2), while Stillman's No. 2 team of Luis Mendoza and Alexzandar Zobec were victorious over the Maroon Tigers' pair of Noah Terry and Chris Hawthorne by score of (8-2). The Tigers also received a victory from its No. 3 doubles team of Vladyslar Zhrov and Jelffrey Farias, who defeated Morehouse's Joseph Brooks and James Perry for the early lead.
In singles action, the 2013 SIAC Player of the Year Lee dominated his opponent Kahai Hall in the No.1 slot, (6-0, 6-0), to give Stillman a 4-0 lead. In the matchup against No.2's Luis Mendoza won his match over Jonathan McFarland (6-4, 6-2), which gave Stillman the victory and the championship.
Tuskegee defeats Benedict (5-4) for Third Place
Tuskegee defeated Benedict (5-4) to win third place in the 2013 SIAC Men's Tournament Championship consolation round match.
Tuskegee took a 2-1 advantage from the doubles round and won three out of the last five matches to claim the third place prize.
