Baseball Falls Short in Loss at Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. — The Stillman College baseball team was held scoreless despite early traffic on the bases in a 10-0 loss to the University of Mobile Rams on March 17 at Jacobs Field.

Stillman put a runner aboard in the opening frame when Javian Rives reached on a fielder's choice after Davion Wilkins drew a walk, but the Tigers couldn't capitalize. Mobile answered with pressure in the first, loading the bases before working out of the inning without damage against starter Zack Munger.

The Tigers threatened again in the second as Jonathan Phillips singled to left, but a double play erased the opportunity. Munger settled in on the mound, retiring Mobile in order in the second and keeping the game scoreless through two.

Mobile broke through in the third. An error helped extend the inning before Trevor Murphy delivered an RBI single to center, bringing in the game's first run. Stillman looked to respond in the fourth when Matthew Rivers singled and later stole second, and both Jonathan Phillips and John Roland worked walks to load the bases. The Tigers, however, left all three stranded to keep it a one-run game.

Stillman continued to apply pressure on the basepaths in the fifth when Wilkins singled and stole second, but the Tigers again came up empty. Mobile took advantage in the bottom half, capitalizing on an error and a pair of RBI singles to push across three runs and extend the lead to 4-0.

The Tigers' best chance to reset came in the sixth when Rivers reached on an error and advanced on a sacrifice bunt, but a double play ended the inning. Mobile added another run in the bottom of the sixth, using a hit, a walk, and a Stillman error to make it 5-0.

In the seventh, Mobile used a pair of singles and aggressive baserunning, including advances on a balk, to tack on another run. The eighth inning proved decisive, as Mobile strung together multiple hits and took advantage of an error to plate five more runs and end the contest.

Stillman finished with six hits, led by Rivers' 2-for-4 performance. Despite drawing walks and swiping two bases, the Tigers were unable to convert opportunities, leaving four runners on base and hitting into two double plays.

Munger, who went six innings with three strikeouts and three earned runs, kept Stillman within striking distance through six innings, limiting the damage. Tristen Henry (1.1 innings, four earned runs, and a strikeout) and Bobby Woodard combined in relief, with Mobile capitalizing on late-inning opportunities to seal the win.
