Baseball Defeats Wilberforce 20-9 to Win Weekend Series

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Stillman College baseball team scored early and often during game three of the series against Wilberforce University Bulldogs as the Tigers defeated the visitors 20-9 in seven innings to capture victory in HBCU Athletic Conference competition Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field.

Wilberforce scored in the top of the first thanks to a sacrifice fly from Joe Mendy.

The Tigers responded quickly at the bottom of the first, starting with an RBI-single from Samuel Fleming, who went through the left side to bring in Kobe Lewis. Thedrick Harris followed with a single through the right side to bring in Minor.

Cameron Sipp got in on the action with a sacrifice fly to right field, which brought in Fleming. Davion Wilkins received an RBI the hard way by being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. This allowed Harris to advance home from third. Devin Kelly capped the six-run inning with a single through the left side for two RBIs as Michael Moses and Javian Rives scored to move the score to 6-1.

Then, in the second, Harris hit a moon-shot home run to left field for three runs, bringing in Fleming and Minor. Lewis drew a bases-loaded walk as Rives scored. Next time up for Minor, he cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to left center. Fleming brought Minor home with the next at-bat, using a single to left field to close the massive inning with a 14-1 lead.

Christopher Diaz-Alcateras ended the scoring run for the Tigers to move the score to 14-2 after a ground out RBI in the third inning. The Bulldogs added a run in the fourth thanks to an RBI-single from Beau Spears.

The Tigers responded with Fleming and Harris drawing back-to-back walks to move the score to 16-3.

Wilberforce closed the gap again in the fifth with three runs capped by a Spears RBI.

Stillman answered again in the bottom of the inning, with Devin Kelly nabbing two RBIs as Wilkins and Moses scored. Lewis hit an RBI single to left to bring in Kelly. Fleming then used some heady base running to serve as a distraction as Lewis stole home to go up 20-6

The Bulldogs added three runs in the seventh, but the Stillman defense preserved a 20-9 run-rule victory.

Harris turned in another terrific performance to close a series with five RBIs on 2-for-4 hitting with a home run. Kobe Lewis led on the base paths with a pair of stolen bases.

Gavin Rehorn (2-1) pitched five innings and posted three strikeouts. Kenton Peterson worked two innings in relief and struck out two batters.

Stillman College returns to action Tuesday on the road against Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, starting at 2 p.m.
