Men’s Basketball Defeats Visiting Voorhees, 71-56

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Four Tigers scored in double figures as the Stillman College men's basketball team handed the Voorhees University Tigers a 71-56 loss Thursday evening in HBCU Athletic Conference action in Birthright Alumni Hall. 

Michael Taylor led the way with 18 points, five assists, four rebounds, and two assists. Jaylon Taylor posted 12 points, while Calvin Finch Jr. and Joshua Price both added 10.

It was a back-and-forth affair early as both teams traded a small lead until Voorhees pulled ahead by eight points after a layup from Keshawn Evans to move the score to 14-6 with 13:57 on the clock. 

The hosting Tigers responded with a 13-4 run capped by a layup from Brenden Lankford-Johnson to take a 19-18 lead. However, Bryce Wilson promptly responded with a three-pointer to put Voorhees back on top 21-19. On the very next possession, Taylor tied the game with a layup. 

Stillman eventually worked to a seven-point lead when Brandon Howard hit a jumper with 40 seconds to go, but Voorhees hit two straight shots to cut the lead to 36-33 at the half. 

With 15:37 to go in the second half, Evans hit a layup to give the visitors their final lead of the night at 42-41. 

From there, the Tigers built as much as a 17-point advantage on three separate occasions with the final time coming with 27 seconds to go when Taylor hit a layup to move the score to 71-54. Umar Lawson wrapped up scoring with a layup with 21 seconds left to reach the final 71-56 in a win for Stillman. 

The Tigers shot 46.6 percent (27-of-58) as a team from the floor, 29.2 percent (7-of-24) from three, and 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from the free throw line. 

Evans led Voorhees with 19 points and five rebounds. Lawson chimed in with 10 points, and Dylan Magloire pulled down eight rebounds. 

The Tigers are on the road for the rest of the regular season starting on February 18, against Wilberforce (Ohio) University at 6:30 p.m. locally. The contest was rescheduled from January 9 due to a Winter Storm.
