Men’s Basketball Outlasts Voorhees in 67-62 Win

DENMARK, S.C. – The Stillman College men's basketball team had the game in control, but the hosting Voorhees University Tigers made nothing easy as Stillman came away with a 67-62 win in HBCU Athletic Conference competition Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers never trailed in the contest and opened the ball game on a 12-2 run capped by Brandon Howard's three-pointer with 14:48 on the first half clock. Omari Bryson followed with a three seconds later, and Tyler Martin fired right back with a three-pointer to put the Stillman up 15-5.

The lead pushed to as much as 14 points when another three from Martin moved the score to 36-22 with 3:06 left until the break. Stillman settled on a 38-29 lead at the break.

The visiting Tigers led by as much as 15 points with 10:23 to go after a jumper from Joshua Price moved the score to 53-38. However, Voorhees chopped that lead down to six after free throws from Bryson closed the gap to 54-68 with 6:09 on the clock.

Stillman pushed the lead back to 12 points with 1:45 remaining after free throws from Brendon Lankford-Johnson put 62-50 on the scoreboard.

Voorhees responded with one more rally down the stretch and whittled the lead down to just three points at 65-62 thanks to a 12-3 run capped by a three from Alonzo Johnson with four seconds left. Unfortunately for Voorhees, the run came too late as free throws from Martin put the game away as Stillman collected the 67-62 win.

Martin led Stillman with 17 points and eight rebounds. Calvin Finch Jr. added 15 points and eight rebounds as well. Price rounds out a trio of double-digit scorers with 10 points with four rebounds.

As a unit, the Tigers shot 40 percent (24-of-60) from the floor, 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from three and 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the free throw line.

Keshawn Evans posted a double-double for Voorhees with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Bryson added 16 points.

Next up for Stillman College is another HBCUAC matchup against Oakwood University in a whiteout. Fans are encouraged to wear white for the game with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. in Birthright Alumni Hall.
