Baseball Drops Season Opening Contests to Tuskegee

TUSKEGEE, Ala – The Stillman College baseball team opened the season facing some stiff competition in NCAA Division II opponent Tuskegee University. The Tigers dropped both games of the opening-day doubleheader by the score of 7-4 in both contests Saturday.

Game 1 - Tuskegee 7, Stillman 4

Samuel Fleming notched an RBI in the top of the first with a single to center field to bring in Kobe Lewis to give Stillman a 1-0 lead.

Tuskegee stormed back in the second inning with three straight runs capped by an RBI single from Ryan Morrow to take a 3-1 lead.

The Tigers responded with three consecutive runs to take the lead starting with Troy Davis scoring on a wild pitch in the third. In the fourth, Cameron Sipp used a sacrifice fly to pate Gavin Rehorn and Fleming smashed an RBI single to right field to knock in Devin Kelly to move the score to 4-3.

However, a run in the bottom of the fourth for Tuskegee tied the game and three more in the fifth highlighted by a two-run homer from Evan Jones to give the team the 7-4 lead which held as the final margin.

Fleming finished the first game of the year 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Kelly received three walks and stole a base, and Josh Wilson was walked twice.

Griff Minor went five innings in the start with four strikeouts. He allowed nine hits and seven earned runs. Xavier Reyna pitched an inning of relief, allowed no hits and walked a batter.

 Game 2 - Tuskegee 7, Stillman 4

The second game of the day started in favor of Tuskegee as the team scored six runs over the first three innings with the final coming as Austin Evans stole home for the sixth run.

Davion Wilkins got an RBI the hard way as he was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded allowing Fleming to score from third to get the Tigers on the board 6-1.

After Tuskegee added a run in the fifth, Stillman scored the remaining runs in the game in the seventh inning starting with Wilkins stealing home. Lewis smacked a single toward first for Rehorn to score. Fleming wrapped the scoring with a single to center field for an RBI to score Kameran Belsar. However, the rally fell short and Tuskegee won 7-4.

Fleming turned in another quality performance with a 2-for-4 effort with an RBI. Belsar, Wilkins and Rehorn all stole bases in the game. Javian Rives and Wilkins were both hit by pitches.

Raymon Vaughn pitched all six defensive innings with four strikeouts. He allowed eight hits, seven runs and five walks.

Stillman College wraps the weekend series with Tuskegee University tomorrow starting at 2 p.m.
