Stillman Wins Fifth-Straight, Locks SSAC Bid

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Five Stillman College players scored in double figures Saturday afternoon as the Tigers won their fifth-straight game, 79-74, at William Carey University.
The win maintains Stillman's spot at No. 2 in the Southern States Athletic Conference and clinched a spot in the SSAC Men's Basketball Championship, Feb. 28-March 2, in Montgomery, Alabama. It also completed a sweep of Loyola University and William Carey on the road in the same weekend, becoming the first NAIA program to do so since 2020.

Three players had double figures in the first half with Bailey Talley scoring 11 points in 10 minutes, Antonio Jones's 10 points in 16 minutes and Marcus Bates Jr.'s 10 points in 20 minutes. Jamar Jackson also had nine in the first half. The game saw nine lead changes in the first 15 minutes, but Stillman closed the final five minutes of the first half on a 14-4 run to lead 46-37 at halftime.
Brenden Lankford-Johnson paced Stillman in the second half with 12 points and finished with 14.

William Carey chipped away at Stillman's 10-point lead in the second half to close the gap to 56-54 on a Dylan Brumfield layup. However, Lankford-Johnson answered to hold the Tigers' lead. Brumfield later pulled the Crusaders in front, 61-60, with less than nine minutes to play. It was the first of four lead changes in the next five minute. After Lankford-Johnson tied it, a Justin Minter layup with 3:22 to play put the Tigers up 72-70.

Minter added a free throw a few moments later, followed by a Jones' only basket of the second half to keep a one-possession lead, 75-72, with two minutes to play. Bates and Jackson each hit a pair of free throws in the final minute to secure the road victory. Jones finished with 12 points.

Talley led Stillman with 17 points and eight rebounds in 21 minutes of action, while Bates scored 16 with a complete game. Jackson scored 13.

Brumfield led all players with 25 points for WCU, while Earl Smith scored 14 and Ankerion Gross had 12.

Stillman (15-7, 12-3) will return to Birthright Alumni Hall on Thursday, Feb. 8 to host Thomas University at 7:30 p.m.
