MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - Stillman College was unable to close out a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader at Brewton-Parker College on Saturday, falling 5-4 in a 10-inning first game, before seeing Game 2 slip away, 13-5.
The Tigers led in both games before the host Barons (16-26, 7-14 SSAC) rallied late.
GAME 1: BREWTON-PARKER 5, STILLMAN 4 (10 Innings)
A scheduled seven-inning game stretched to 10 innings Saturday afternoon after Brewton-Parker pushed back from a 4-2 hole to tie the game in bottom of the seventh inning. Tiger starting pitcher
Steven Oates went the distance in regulation, allowing three earned runs out of four. He gave up seven hits, one walk and struck out five.
Mason Collins gave Stillman a 2-0 lead with a single to right in the top of the first inning and scored on a wild pitch. While Brewton-Parker fought back with a run in the second and fourth, both RBIs from Tate Worrell,
Kelvin Reese made it a 4-2 Stillman lead with a RBI single in the top of the sixth.
Worrell struck again in the bottom of the seventh, forcing extra innings with a two-run home run to right center.
Stillman stranded a runner in scoring position in the top of the 10th before Malik Germany delivered a game-winning two-run double in the bottom of the inning.
Reese hit 3-for-4 to lead Stillman in the game, while
Geoff Grier was 2-for-4 in his first game back from injury.
Griff Minor, Samiel Fleming,
Justin Cummings,
Bryant Rhooms and Collins each had one hit.
Collins (1-5) pitched the last 2.2 extra innings for Stillman, allowing one run off three hits, a walk and a hit batter.
GAME 2: BREWTON-PARKER 13, STILLMAN 5
Stillman once again took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a bases-loaded, three-run double by
Kelvin Reese.
The Barons collected an earned and unearned run in the bottom of the first, and
Samuel Fleming answered for the Tigers with a two-run double in the top of the second.
It was 5-2 Stillman when Kennard Dawson homered for BPC in the third inning. Tate Worrell gave Brewton-Parker the lead with a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth. Dawson later added a grand slam that bounced off the top of the wall, capping a seven-run inning to push the Barons' lead to 10-5. Three more runs were scored in the sixth inning.
After the second inning, the Tigers were held hitless, with only a walk in the fifth and hit batter in the top of the seventh.
Devin Kelly was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Geoff Grier was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and two runs scored. Fleming and Reese each had one hit.
Griff Minor (3-5) took the loss after allowing 10 runs, eight earned, off six hits and three walks through four innings. He struck out three.
Ty Cook (4-10) recorded the win for Brewton-Parker.
NEXT: Stillman (12-23, 1-17) will return home to Tiger Field for five games this coming week. The Tigers will host Tougaloo College in a non-conference HBCU doubleheader on Tuesday, April 18 at 1 p.m., and then will host Middle Georgia State University for a three-game SSAC series on April 21-22. Saturday's games will be Senior Day.
