Stillman Upsets No. 15 Loyola in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Mardis Gras might be over, but Stillman College delivered a party of hits Friday night to upset No. 15 Loyola University, 12-8, at Segnette Field. It's the program's first Top 25 win since taking down No. 11 Middle Georgia at home in 2021 and first road win over a Top 25 team since Stillman defeated an NCAA DII Top 10 University of West Alabama team twice in 2016.

After seeing its three-run lead disappear in the eighth inning, Stillman rallied with a five-run top of the ninth to put away the Wolfpack.

Griff Minor and Bryant Rhooms both walked to start the ninth and moved into scoring position on a Sammuel Fleming sac bunt. That's when Mason Collins singled in one run to tie the game, 8-8. TJ Davis followed with a two-run single to put Stillman back on top, 10-8. But it was Tre'en Dorsett, who iced the game with a two-run home run. Cody Clark closed out the night on the mound, shutting down the Wolfpack in the bottom of the ninth.

Aggressive base running helped Loyola to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Brandon Mooney beat out a bunt single, then worked his way around to third base before scoring on a Tucker Ganley sacrifice fly. With the bases clear, Cole Romero singled to right and stole third and home to manufacture the Wolfpack's second run.

Dorsett led off the third inning with a single to left. He later scored on an error to cut the Loyola lead in half. Christopher Bohrer made it a two-run lead, 3-1, again with a two-out RBI single to left.

Stillman worked the bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning with a pair of walks. Dorsett once again scored on an error to cut the Wolfpack's lead to one run, 3-2. Devin Kelly followed with an RBI single to tie the game, and Flemming later delivered a two-out, two-run single to put Stillman in front, 5-3.

Bohrer's sac fly in the bottom of the fifth got one run back for Loyola, but Stillman stretched its lead again to 7-4 with two runs in the sixth inning. Collins led off the sixth with a single before TJ Davis drew a walk. Geoff Grier delivered a two-out single to score Collins' courtesy runner, Varrick Lawrence. Kelly then doubled to center to drive in pinch Runner TJ Blackmon.

Loyola fought back within a run with a two-run single by Kason Cullins in the bottom of the seventh.

Isidro Jimenez took over for Justin Cummings in the bottom of the eighth after Loyola drew two walks with two outs. Romero broke up the save situation with a ground ball to second that led to an error and game-tying run, 7-7. Loyola took an 8-7 lead with Ganley scoring on a wild pitch, but Jimenez struck out Ryan Smilari to end the inning and strand two runners.

Jimenez (1-1) recorded the win in relief.

Dorsett, Kelly and Collins each hit 2-for-4 to lead Stillman. Kelly, Fleming, Davis and Dorsett each had two RBI.

Mooney hit 3-for-5 to lead the Wolfpack, while Romero was 2-for-4. Mitcheel Cope was charged with the loss in relief, giving up four runs in the top of the ninth.

Stilman (10-7, 1-3 SSAC) will return to Loyola (18-9, 5-2 SSAC) on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The Tigers are now 3-10 against Loyola since 2018.
