HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Playing with a shortened roster in the 2022-2023 season opener, Stillman College fell by two at Oakwood University, 50-48, on Nov. 1.
Returning point guard
Derrick Finklea recorded 23 points and six rebounds to lead Stillman in the game, while newcomer
Bailey Talley added 13 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two blocks in his Stillman debut.
Stillman led by double digits for most of the opening 10 minutes of play. However, Oakwood used an 13-0 run late in the first half to take a 25-23 lead with 1:19 to play in the half. The Ambassadors scored 15 unanswered before Finklea hit a jumper with 0.3 seconds left in the half to snap a near five-minute Tigers' scoring drought and cut Oakwood's lead to two points, 27-25, at halftime.
Oakwood's largest lead of the night was six points, 47-41 with 6:15 remaining in the game. Stillman built a 7-0 run over the next four minutes to regain the lead, 48-47, on a pair of free throws by
Daviyon Dennis with 1:58 to play. However, a late basket gave Oakwood the win. Dennis finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
Both teams struggled offensively, shooting less than 35% from the field. Judelin Prophete was the only Oakwood player to score in double digits with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Stillman (0-1) will not see the court again until Monday night at 7:30 p.m. for an exhibition game at Southeastern Baptist University. The regular season resumes Nov. 10-11 for a pair of non-conference games in Holly Springs, Mississippi.
